they give you that price b/c they don't want to f with it. Find someone with a welder that gives a crap and I bet the price would be a lot lower.

I'd throw it on some ramps and clean up the areas to have a really good look. Welding on a few plates is really no biggie... but.. If they are structural, as at least one appears to be, some extra steel sections may also improve the strength. Maybe just some "structurally made up sections" tacked into position may be enough. I knew of someone who made a ute ( SUV ? )out of an Outback. Basically they cut off the rear roof. The chassis bent through the rear doors! Was not a good look. He then welded some 3 x 2 steel framing as a chassis rail down both sides, just tacking along the inside of the sills. It worked fine. He drove it to an auto engineer for advice - and was told :"why the overkill.... "

Thats what I am thinking also Matty...Only person I had for that stuff was Doug and he is no longer in business...plus moved..plus never see or hear from . Dont weld myself...dont have a welder..and even if I did I would be too novice to do anything like this. Plus its alot more serious than those pics show...I couldnt get under it enough to get a clear shot

No access to a mig or oxy at all - how about hire? If you can solder, you can braize ( brazing rods with oxy ) have you ever silver soldered? Very similar to brazing I hired an oxy set and braized up my old car... I now have an LPG jet torch which nearly brazes. If you have an LPG blowtorch, you can get handyman LPG / OXY leads and brazing tip quite reasonable ( well in Aus anyway) Oh I suppose you'll need a set of ramps, but nothing that a few painters planks and some bricks wont fix ( been there too ) Go for it Gal cant be any worse than it is now... Just another bow string Connie

bucky --- andrew's car is way worse than that. The driver's side is almost buttoned up now, I just feel bad that it is taking me so long to fix it. He's lucky I only charge him a 12 pack here and there Only wish I had the time to save another rusted up XT from the boneyard, I'd help you out in a heartbeat for cost of materials and beer. School is just ramping up though for this year. If the car is still around maybe talk to me next summer. I'd be able to get things done quicker if I had a garage, which actually should be available by next summer. unfortunately if you sell him, even to another enthusiast, he is likely to get driven into the ground and then parted out. My repairs don't look exactly stock but they are as good or better. I remake a few things so they aren't as likely to rust out in the future.... (P.S. did I tell you I have NO training in welding? ) also I agree with the guys that say you are getting that price because nobody wants to deal with it. It literally IS as simple as bending metal to match the old stuff, cutting it out, and welding the new stuff in. looks don't matter as much on the underneath and we all know you are good at bodywork as it is!

Derek.... I may just take you up on your offer...we went out to the local fair for a little bit today...and when we got home we had a wedding gift from Tommys parents that changes everything...Imagine being able to take care off the old and start fresh again...well thats what we got...we are both still floored...But looks like I will be able to save my boy..actually both my boys and my little girl too..With the amazing new job I got and now this..our whole world just changed. Rocky WILL be saved...and...if I dont try this repair myself ( which I dont really want to try) I would rather hand him over to a fellow enthusiast who I would 100% trust and does it out of a labor of love...Plus I would rather give money to a person I know can use it. I am hoping to have Pheebie ( the Imp) all legal and ready to go into service next weekend I am still floored right now
